We decided to take it easy the day after our horseback ride and spent the next afternoon exploring the shops and sites along Ali'i Drive. Our first stop was the farmer's market where we marveled at the array of fresh flowers and variety of tropical fruits.
A couple of blocks north of the farmer's market is Hawaii's oldest Christian church. Constructed in 1820 of lava rock and crushed coral mortar, it marks a time when native Hawaiians began converting to Christianity. I have an ancestor who became a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1800's/early 1900's. It made me wonder if she had ever visited this church.
Our walk continued to the north end of Ali'i Drive, stopping in various shops and doing the tourist thing. We ended our self-guided tour, passing some huge banyan tress and finishing our day with a tasty shaved ice before heading back.
Our condo at Kanaloa at Kona was a partial ocean view and overlooked a portion of the adjacent golf course. In the evenings, we would make our way to the greens and take in the gorgeous Hawaiian sunsets.
