We decided to take it easy the day after our horseback ride and spent the next afternoon exploring the shops and sites along Ali'i Drive. Our first stop was the farmer's market where we marveled at the array of fresh flowers and variety of tropical fruits.

Hawaii's oldest Christian church

A couple of blocks north of the farmer's market is Hawaii's oldest Christian church. Constructed in 1820 of lava rock and crushed coral mortar, it marks a time when native Hawaiians began converting to Christianity. I have an ancestor who became a missionary to the Hawaiian Islands in the late 1800's/early 1900's. It made me wonder if she had ever visited this church.

Our walk continued to the north end of Ali'i Drive, stopping in various shops and doing the tourist thing. We ended our self-guided tour, passing some huge banyan tress and finishing our day with a tasty shaved ice before heading back.

Our condo at Kanaloa at Kona was a partial ocean view and overlooked a portion of the adjacent golf course. In the evenings, we would make our way to the greens and take in the gorgeous Hawaiian sunsets.

High Surf on the Kona Coast

The following day was the NFL AFC/NFC Championships playoffs so we wandered the condo complex's grounds while waiting for the games to start. The surf had been high and we had noticed large wave spray down the golf course. Walking the cart path, we found these were being caused by the waves crashing at the shore at the base of some small lava tubes. The results were spectacular.

Bob and I at dinner at Huggo's

Bob and I lunched and took in the games at Don Drysdale's Two, a sports bar/restaurant owned by the former LA Dodgers pitcher. Later, we enjoyed the sunset over dinner at Huggo's, one of Ali'i Drive's many shoreline restaurants.
