Pre-flight
After the Dawn Patrol liftoff, the rest of the balloon pilots and crews ready their balloons. Burners are tested and the envelopes are laid out with the baskets secured.
At left, the crew begins inflating the Mayflower balloon (pilot Kevin Knapp). Once significantly inflated, the top of the balloon must be tethered until a controled lift to a free-standing position is desired.
There are typically 30 or so balloons preparing for liftoff at the same time. Most are the typical balloon shape, but some are unique - such as "Sushi" (pilot Katie Griggs) and the "Purple People Eater" (pilot John Cavin).
Energizer Bunny - from limp to liftoff
One of the most difficult balloons to set up was the Energizer Bunny balloon (pilot Glo Kehoe) due to the various compartments that have the be inflated.
